Lorna Thomas - 10/10/2005 The recently deceased Pope John Paul II said that Europe should look to its Christian roots and the current Pope Benedict XVI as the former Cardinal Ratzinger, was widely regarded as Kingmaker. With a German Pope and a conservative Christian government in Germany (the CDU is a largely Catholic party), there could be a greater move towards combining religion and politics.
There have already been moves in that direction in the past. East German priest and church lawyer, Steffen Heitmann was Justice Minister of Saxony. To the surprise and dismay of some, he was supported by Chancellor Kohl of the CDU, for the role of German President in the 1994 elections. Heitmann was forced to withdraw due to his xenophobic views.
On April 29, 1997 Steffen Heitmann and Archbishop Giovanni Layola, ratified a Concordat signed on July 2 1996 between the Vatican and the Free State of Saxony governing Church-State relations.
It was the first Concordat between the Vatican and an East German state and the second one with a German state since Hitler concluded a Concordat with the Pope in 1933, one was concluded with Lower Saxony in 1965. (In 1929 Mussolini signed the Lateran Treaty with the Catholic Church, bringing into being the Vatican City State with full diplomatic and political power.)
Additionally, Latin America may also play a significant role in religion as a large percentage of the world's Catholics reside in Latin America. In this respect Argentine Carlos Annacondia has been a pivotal figure in uniting people from all religions, literally at ground level, as they have been plain in the spirit¡¦or experienced Demonic deliverance¡¦ a hallmark of Annacondian ministry.
Relations between Germany and Russia are set to become closer. As America and Britain decline in prestige and power, for a time Germany and Russia are poised to become leading nations in the world. The Fatima prophecy states that when Russia is consecrated to Mary, there will be peace in the world, therefore there may be a move to bring Russia to Mary in the hope of world peace, dissolving the divide between the Catholic and Orthodox churches.
The world is weary of war and suffering. However, a move to establish world peace beneath the banner of religion under religious and state leaders could instead herald a time of great trouble. Lorna Thomas is a freelance author.
