The best way to answer this question would be a thorough scientific study carried out by impartial scientists. However, there are a couple problems with such a study. First, the system under study is exceptionally complex. Simple physical models (like the model of spherical horse in vacuum) cannot not grasp all the complexity and thus are useless. As for complicated models, they have a tendency to predict whatever their creators build into them. Second problem is to find impartial scientists. Whatever they think about themselves, scientists often tend to accept the matearilistic, and therefore, leftist points of view.
What we do know about Global Warming is that Earth temperature went up about 0.8 degrees in 150 years. We do not know why, however. According to recent scientific findings, the temperature on Mars also showed a slight increase during the same time. Since humans could not have had an effect on the red planet, the suggestion is that the Sun is causing a tempreture rise, just as it did in the past when temperature rose and fell.
That, however, is not sufficient for the global warming movement. In the stregnth of its beliefs despite the absence of conclusive evidence, theyresemble a newly invented religion.
The global warming movement is a part of the Green movement, which has a long history as a leftist socialist bunch who are out to stop "greedy capitalists" from using oil, while refusing to curtail their own waste, as was recently revealed about Al Gore, Barbra Streisand and others.
According to the "green" theory, the "greedy capitalists" steal from simple
people something that must belong to everybody - oxygen.
The second feature of the global warming movement is the apocalyptic character of their predictions - if the problems are not solved immediately, the World is doomed for a fast and inevitable death.
One may wonder why the global warmists moved to the center of the political debate. Recently it has became the official ideology of the European Union, the UN and the American Democratic Party.
Huge amounts of money are spent in Europe to comply with new strict requirements for energy efficiency. The reasons, as I see them, can be separated into three large groups. It is not always easy to decide to which group each particulr reason belongs because they are not completely different and have much in common.
1. Legitimate reasons
Some warming of the climate really did occur.
Europe wants to become energy-independent and spends money on new infrastructure now, which can possibly save much bigger spendings in future.
2. Ideological and political reasons
Collapse of socialism meant an urgent need to fill in the vacuum, with environmentalism and multiculturalism as the favorite new religion.
The growing apocalyptic feeling, especially in Europe, that liberal policy will destroy current order and, probably, the continent itself, forever. The global warming theory substitutes concerns about imaginary climate change for those real concerns.
Having failed at solving the real problems, the EU and the UN need to invent a problem to fix.
Inevitable slowing down of scientific progress raises doubts about science being the solution to all human problems. However, if the Earth is saved due to scientific prediction, that would be another triumph of science.
The desire to "stick it" to the capitalists, especially those from the United States.
3. Unconscious reasons.
The baby boom generation is aging. Without them, the catastrophe is inevitable. They believe they saved the world from racism, imperialism, colonialism and neo-Nazism, but who will save mankind when they are gone?
The liberal world order, glorified by Francis Fukiyama, seems to be going, too. And without liberalism, the World does not deserve to exist. It will be drowned and suffocate.
Having made it a political argument, the Left reduced the possibility of solving this problem by scientific means. As Sigmund Freud theorized, when a part of the body becomes excessively sexualized, it stops performing its natural functions. From now on, how the CO2 spectral properties influence the intensity of Earth's infrared radiation will be decided by street marches and popular votes - rather than scientific findings.
