If God Had A Vote...

Ghazal Omid - 8/27/2007

Watching last night's news, which is already inundated with speculation about future elections, made me wonder: With all the promises that men and women, some of whom are even preachers in Christian churches, make to God and man, how much do they really care about what they say...?

Well, judging by the tone of some of these candidates, you get the impression that they must pray to God for hours on end and think only about how to serve humanity! In fact, their actions are too often contrary to everything they teach. A recent example would be ex-Congressman Mark Foley, revealed as a moral hypocrite indulging in practices far removed from what he preached. And his political party seems to have paid the price for his sins.

Not that either party has a lock on shame. We are remember former President Clinton's finger-wagging declaration, "I did not have sex with that woman." Later, of course, he denied lying under oath, parsing it instead as "I just didn't volunteer to tell the truth" and "it depends on what you think is is."

As a Muslim, I was taught to tell the truth in black and white, no exceptions.

Will the politicians, who make endless promises under God's watchful eye ever learn to admit, "I am not a bad Republican or a bad Democrat. I just happen to be a bad person!"

Will we ever learn to judge people by their own actions, not by their political affiliation, and to delay judgment and execution until we determine whether they truly are guilty? I do hope this will happen in this lifetime but, I honestly doubt it.

Since the dawn of creation, we have lived on evil promises and it seems the colorful lies and deceptions are still all too comfortably familiar and damned "cool" in our time.

However, if we could receive an e-mail from God, now and then, what would he say to us?

I think God would say, "There is no honest politician in this world. Period. Stop believing one's word over another. Politicians, whether they are Democrats or Republicans, will always lie about something."

Moreover, He would ask us to stop using religion to further our own agendas. He would tell us to leave science to the scientists; not to the preachers, whether they be evangelical or more subdued, not to the priests or the rabbis or the mullahs or anyone else attempting to inject religion into scientific facts.

I think God would say, "If you want to have a war, have it at your own expense, not mine. However, I feel certain he would tell the U.S. politicians, "If you want to win the war on Terrorism, use the right people. You can't win the war in Iraq by marrying Mr. Right-Now-For-Today instead of Mr. Right.

He would tell the gullible people who think having a wishful "friendship" with barbarians, such as the leader of Iran, will expedite peace in Iraq — to take a look at how many innocent people have been killed in Iran's infamous Evin Prison. For more information, please read the petition on my webpage.

Take a look at the pictures of the poor people of Iran; women sleeping on the streets, children begging, men injecting themselves with heroin to forget the pain. God will say to anyone who wants to make a deal with the evil regime of Iran, "You are going to have to face me someday, because I will never forgive those who step on the blood of innocents to make the next deal. They will not go unpunished."

God is in us all, as He has stated in the Koran, the Bible and the Torah. Please take time to listen.
