Home >> Africa >> Somalia Email Print Somalia, You are not worth the trouble Abdirahman Mohamed Dirye - 7/5/2011 The notorious war criminal as well as Somaliland’s most wanted man, General Mohamed (Said) Hirsi Morgan, who is a mass murderer, often makes trips to Kenya whenever he wants to do so. His freedom of travel and confidence, stems from not the lack of arrest warrant issued for him by the International Criminal Court (ICC) but also INTERPOL’s setting him free for unexplained reasons.
Imagine if the victims were English; he would be handed over to The Hague War Crime Tribunal much like Yugoslavia War Criminals in a fraction of second to be tried there. However after the announcement of the arrest of Ratco Mladic, many Somalilanders have believed that international justice system begun to function but with the slow pace, makes the victims of Morgan’s brutality skeptical. It is obvious to me probably to anybody else that international judiciary framework is not completely kosher. But where is the justice? Awaiting our grievances to be considered made us anxious, and it seems that the door of justice banged shut leaving us outside to freeze; finally, however, mob justice may arise. In any event, the War Crime Tribunal in The Hague has the habit of disappointing the weak, the vulnerable and pleasing the powerful, arrogant ones.
Governing the Northwestern Somalia recently known as Somaliland, Mr. Mohamed Hirsi Morgan had committed extremely brutal crimes: wanton destruction of major cities of Somaliland, poisoning water wells, pinpointing massive artilleries of both air and land against densely inhabited areas of both Hargaysa and Burao without rebel presence, and terrorizing civilian by burning innocent people alive. As you see the above picture, another war criminal, Colonel Tuke is burning a member of the Issaaq Clan while smiling; above all, the forced ululation of force-brought mothers at Badkha, an execution point in Hargaysa, while their beloved sons and daughters are summarily executed for simple reason of ethnic grounds is nightmare for the survivors.
Far from over, you can watch this video clip of Malko Durduro www.youtube.com/watch?v=pUya1jlxvx8 which is mass graves that epitomized the wicked soul of this perpetrator. He is the worst immoral man Somalia could ever have before the arrival of the cult of Al-Shabaab, besides, these graves were unearthed during a rainy season; the dead were youth, mainly secondary school students, businessmen, and women chained together and stormed by fire squad, it is hard to describe the scene in words, as I witnessed this tragedy while I was a kid and now writing an article about it, tears come out of my eyes, in fact, this was Africa’s holocaust but the world ignored. My father had violently died in this barbaric campaign— I think every one of the Issaaq tribe lost one of a beloved family member to this disastrous atrocity. Since the war crimes in Somaliland happened earlier than Darfur, the warrant of arrest issued for Omer Al- Bashir of Sudan was slap in the face for truly brutalized masses because Mr. Morgan, the “ Butcher of Hargaysa” as he is locally known was free over the past two decades! Unfortunately, no interrogation by Police let alone warrant of arrest; therefore, international law does not seem to equally protect people, it pays more attention to certain countries— presumably countries with economic interest— and entirely ignores others like my little country of Somaliland! Why? The Hague responded to the victims differently: Darfur War Criminals are wanted; Yugoslav ones are dealt with; Somaliland War Criminals have gone unmentioned internationally! The orphaned children still waiting to see mass killers brought to justice. But that is very unlikely in the status quo as politics take precedence over law.
Colonel Tuke whose war crime was filmed red-handed while burning someone alive in Gabilay of Somaliland got away with it! How heartless he is! I thought .He was just deported from the US unpunished to a third country probably Eritrea! And this expulsion is better than none but would the deportation satisfy the victims? Let us leave readers to judge.
Somaliland accusers alleging General Samater, former vice-president and ex-defense minister of war crimes, having served as commander-in-chief as well as operation officer during Hargaysa War, savagery and unwarranted brutality committed by Samater just to silence popular revolution that was brewing at the time.
Mr. Moreno-Ocampo being the president of The Hague, I address to you as African fellow national as well as a victim of Somalia ex-military regime of Faqash that your obsession with Omer Al-Bashir is taken not only a politically motivated decision but also offence; therefore, you better drop it and focus fully indicted war criminals such Morgan and his brutes.
However, none of the indicted offenders are ever punished at International War Crime Courts since Siyad Barre’s flight; it seems that world has said to us in loud voice “you are not worth the trouble” are you? Somaliland public, as I often said, is taken for granted; any case, how would you feel if you are wronged Man and your aggressor yet serving as jury to you?! This is the case in Somalia. When will the world bring Morgan and his faithless stooges to justice? Perhaps when he dies!
