Extremist Navy Officer Receives Slap On The Wrist

Christopher Pryor - 9/9/2007

On September 12, 2001 , Americans throughout the country were mourning catastrophic loss of life as well as the destruction and damage of treasured American icons - the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

This was not precisely the case for Lt. Commander John Sharpe of the U.S. Navy. While America grieved, Sharpe’s website, the Legion of St. Louis, had the following comments to make concerning the attacks:

Readers will notice that we didn't begin today's special issue on yesterday's remarkable events with "America is attacked." America wasn't attacked. America isn't the World Trade Center, nor is it the Pentagon. At least those things don't represent our America, nor should they for our readers… The media spin masters would have us think that those things represent America, only to encourage a misuse of our Patriotic sentiments...a misuse which has been going on for far too long and which is bound, unfortunately, only to continue as a result of yesterday's intentional plane crashes…
But in a sane world, assuming the tragic issue of the loss of many innocent lives could be set aside for just a moment...in a sane world, the elimination of most of the center of the world's usurious financial system would and should bring a breath of fresh air, a sigh of relief, and a hope for a better day.
The extremist activities of this active-duty naval officer, who would later be granted clearance to work at the Pentagon and would be the official spokesperson for the Atlantic Fleet, did not end with his website. Sharpe went on to join forces with Derek Holland, one of the founders of a neo-Fascist organization called the International Third
Position
.
Together, Sharpe and Holland founded IHS Press and, later, Light in the Darkness Press (LID). LID’s main claim-to-fame is the Neo-Conned series, two books which condemn President George W. Bush for the War in Iraq. Besides the obviously questionable behavior of an active-duty naval officer publicly criticizing his Commander-in-Chief, there are even more sinister questions surrounding Sharpe. Sharpe promotes Ibrahim Ebeid, a former
employee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO,) by posting an exclusive interview with Ebeid on the front page of his “Neo-Conned” website for many months. Ebeid co-edits a very provocative website, Al-moharer.net. Al-moharer which was, and still is, specifically mentioned on Sharpe’s own site, calls for the killing of
U.S. soldiers and encourages the attacking of civilian targets in Iraq!
Another example of the many “claims to shame” of Seaman Sharpe’s
Neo-Conned series is a public endorsement touted on his site. This endorsement comes from the editor of the Irish publication Hibernian, Gerry McGeough. McGeough, is not only an editor like
Holland, Sharpe, and Ebeid, but he also is a convicted arms smuggler for the Irish Republican Army. McGeough, who was released from U.S. prison in 1996 after serving a sentence for attempting to purchase missiles to take down British helicopters, is now awaiting trial in Northern Ireland for attempted murder.
J. Christopher Pryor, an attorney and founder of The Chambers Initiative, stated “[t]he statements made by Sharpe in the wake of the September 11th attacks, his public undermining of the current war effort, and his public dealing with the likes of Holland, Ebeid, and McGeough, raise the question of whether such an officer should continue to serve in the U.S. Navy.”
Pryor, whose website can be found at thechambersinitiative.com, is not the only one criticizing Sharpe’s public behavior. In March 2007, the U.S. Navy conducted an internal investigation, initiated after the Southern Poverty Law Center, an organization that monitors civil-liberties violations, published a report concerning other alleged anti-Semitic statements made by Sharpe.

The official outcome of the investigation is that Sharpe was “appropriately reprimanded and will be reassigned.” The Navy’s decision is currently under appeal by Sharpe. Whatever the reprimand entailed, it did not involve a court-martial, nor was Sharpe expelled. Pryor further commented: “At this time in our country’s history, in the midst of the “War on Terror,” when we are facing an enemy who uses infiltration of our infrastructure as one of its key tactics, it is unimaginable and disheartening to see what kind of activity a naval officer can engage in while still being allowed to wear the uniform.”
